Once again a HUGE thank you to all those who visit our pub and vote for it to be included in the Good Beer Guide. We are very happy and privileged to be included for the fourth year on the trot. Thanks guys

On a personal note I can now announce that I have been accepted to take part in the 2012 Brathay Trust 10 in 10 (10 marathons in 10 days), the clue is in the title. I shall be attempting this massive feat of physical and mental torture, sorry endurance in aid of The Brathay Trust who help out young adults and children who through no fault of their own have lost there way in life and need help and support.

The event takes place during May and clearly I am on the scrounge for donations large and small which can be made at:

www.justgiving.com/paul-dewar10-in-10

There is suppose to be a link below but clearly I am incapable of copying and pasting correctly! Pilot Alan will sort it out for me I'm sure. (Actually, your copy and pasting is quite good, it's the site software that's the problem. Sorted now though! It's on the left now.) Alternatively you may text a donation. This is a free service and all the money plus gift aid will go to the charity. Simply text: TRUD 55 + amount to 70070. EG. TRUD 55 £2 . Easy.

More information about the event and the charity can be found at http://www.brathaywindermeremarathon.org.uk/brathay-10-in-10.aspx. There are some updates and blogs that have been copied over from the marathon website at the bottom of the page for you to read if you are interested.

Thank You for reading my groveling and even more thanks if you donate.. Paul

Just to let anyone who is interested in chess know that Alec & Peter and a few other guys meet on a Tuesday evening at the pub for a few games of chess. This is an informal and friendly group of like minded bods who would happily welcome any chess players whatever their ability to enjoy a game or two and a beer or three.

Our first award.... Yes, after only 4 months of trading we were delighted and pleasantly surprised to be awarded The CAMRA Pub of the Season Award for the Summer Season 2007. Thank You to CAMRA members and all of our customers for such a good start to our time here.

Our second accolade has been to be included in The Beer Bible, ie: The Good Beer Guide published by CAMRA and available from all good book shops for the asking price of somewhere in the region, but not too sure exactly how much, but I think it is probably about £14.97ish. No doubt someone will come and slap my hand for being incorrect.

Our third accolade has been to be included in The Good Beer Guide for another year. This is a fantastic achievement and we are very proud to be entered for a third year.

Yeeeeeehaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!! For the 3rd year on the trot we are delighted to have been chosen by local CAMRA to be included in The Good Beer Guide 2011. This is a fantastic achievement for us and we are  obviously very pleased. I would also like to take this oppurtunity to thank those individuals who post such good comments about us on various websites. Thank You.

On the subject of CAMRA, we are one of the many pubs in the area to be signed up for the LocALE initiative which supports the idea that local is best for both the economy (supporting local brewers and jobs) and also the environment, not to mention the fact that there is some cracking ale brewed in Cumbria. For a list of ales coming in the next few months please view the events/beer coming soon page

Situated just 30 minutes from M6 (junction 36, A590) is the bustling historic market town of Ulverston with its wonderfull cobbled streets and yards. Ulverston is on the southern edge of The Lake District and is an ideal base to explore the south lakes area with Windermere, Kendal, Bowness, Coniston and Morecombe Bay all within easy reach of the town.

Also known for its thriving artistic community the town is proud of the variety and quality of festivals and events which are held throughout the year. Talking of festivals the Manjushri Buddhist Temple is within 2 miles and holds summer and spring festivals. The beautiful and challenging Ulverston golf course is also within 2 miles and boasts some wonderful views over Morecambe Bay. I ought to work for the Tourist Information Centre!!!

Perhaps, however Ulverston's main claim to fame can be that it is the birth place of one Arthur Stanley Jefferson on the 16th June 1890. Here he lived and grew up before moving to America where he became known much better as Stan Laurel (Laurel and Hardy fame). Also situated in the town is the world famous Laurel and Hardy museum, well worth a visit while you are here.

The pub was originally known as The Britannia and was housed in the front of the building with several small rooms. It was well known in the area for good beer and attracted customers from far and wide. The Stan Laurel Inn was opened in its present format in 1976 to a fanfare of publicity and stacks of local interest due to the pub bearing the name of Ulverston's best loved son and arguably the finest comedian of all time who lived only a few yards away in Argyle Street. During the last 30 years the pub has been extended into the cottages next door and also to the rear and now has three distinct rooms downstairs and also three rooms upstairs for bed and breakfast.

Nowadays The Stan Laurel  is been run by Trudi and Paul Dewar who bring with them a wealth of experience.

In the meantime you can reach us on 01229582814. We look forward to hearing from you. You can also contact us at our e-mail address: thestanlaurel@aol.com or at pauldewar6@aol.com but please we cannot take meal bookings by email

If you are not familiar with The Stan Laurel Inn and your first contact with us is online. We would be pleased to hear from you! Please let us know what your needs and questions are, we will be more than happy to help.

04 October 2011 Oooh baby...Jelly babyEvening all, well what a month September was! Plenty of running, obviously, jelly babies, and yellow cotton briefs!?! Oh dear! Where to start?

Well first and most importantly the running, and indeed plenty of it, a shade more than last month which is pleasing and included The Great Langdale Marathon. Tough, very tough but in the end a fantastic run as it happens. Yes, my worst marathon time ever but who cares when you are expected to scale a 1 in 3 climb not once but TWICE. Why do people do this??? Anyway, I ran a negative split for the first time ever and felt really strong at the finish which is always a good sign. Along the way I met several past and present T.I.T ers and managed to drown my waterproof watch in the rain. It has still not recovered, I on the other hand have, and was out the following day bouncing down the road (slight exaggeration) wondering if I could survive another 26 miles, as it happens I managed 3.5 and called it a day! This is going to have to change by May but at least it's a start and there are still 7 and a bit months to go.

I was fumbling around the internet a while ago trying to glean as much info as possible about endurance running and read that it was a sensible idea to try to eat a little something as you run in order to keep the dreaded wall at bay. I have heard the virtues of Jelly Babies sounded out and promptly rushed out to the Co-op (other supermarkets are available) and purchased not one but, two boxes of said Jelly Babies - after all they were on offer. Stuffing some into my waist pack later that day I set off on my weekly long run and thought that I would binge on the JB's every hour or so - not the whole box you understand, just a handfull. I approached my first hour and greadily pulled out some JB's and began munching, all was going well until I had a slight cough and was rewarded with the feeling of masticated JB's being forcefully ejected from my nasal passages. Some what shocked I continued and have since mastered the art of eating JB's and thankfully have had no more incidents, although it did remind me of Mr Nice and his snot rockets of last May. I'm thinking of moving onto Jaffa Cakes for October but am worried about how to carry them. Any ideas on a postcard to Paul Dewar, 31, The ******, etc etc.

I know what you are thinking, what's with the yellow cotton briefs? Ah now, well last night I was enjoying a few beverages of an alcofrolic nature with Mrs D when our conversation turned to running. Trudi, in her youth represented the county in sprint events and yesterday told me she had a lucky pair of knickers, or as she describes them "a lucky pair of yellow cotton briefs which I wore at all the major meetings"."where are they?" I asked, "Do you still have them?" and finally, please remember I had had a few pints of Guinness at this point, "Can I borrow them!" What was I thinking? Can a pair of 20 year old yellow cotton briefs make me run faster? Will they fit me? What the hell would people think of me? Thankfully they no longer exist and Trudi is still with me. Good job nobody will read this and take the... well you know what out of me.

Anyway, at the end of the day fast , medium or slow it doesn't matter, it's all about 20 bodies being dragged around 10 marathons in as many days in support of all the brilliant work that Brathay does. I'm very fortunate to be going on holiday for a week in a few days for a week (that's a mouthful) but many of the children and young adults that Brathay supports can only dream of what we take for granted. Please support myself or any of the other guys running with a donation.

Thank You.

Paul

06 September 2011 Choo choo choo (222) come on and do the conga....Hi guys, it's me again. Well, just a quick update for for you all. Despite the naff weather around these parts for the last week I have still managed to get a few miles in the bank, absolute torrential rain as Sally mentioned and blowing a right hooly for the last 2 days. It does have its bonuses though! Today's run 4 miles into the wind, running as hard as I could and practically going nowhere then turned around and flew home with the wind in half the time. Does this count as a speed session?

There may be a few 2's mentioned in this blog hence the snappy title for the piece. Maybe I'll just get them out of the way now.

Longest run last month, 22 miles. Total for August, go on have a guess, yep you've got it, 222 miles, birthday parties attended, 2, not mine though, cinema attendances, 2, one good film, one 'chick flick' which I did not enjoy and wished I had taken my trainers and gone for a run instead. Slips on mud leading to embarrissing falls, 2, running in to bovine residue, 2, rather hot curries that I regretted eating the next day, 2, and so the list goes on.

In spite of all this I feel I have had a good month and am looking forward to The Langdale Marathon in a couple of weeks time when I shall hopefully bump into some of my fellow runners for next years big event.

Before I clear off, just a big thank you to all those lovely people who have already sponsored me and those who have also pledged money for when I finish the event, and yes I know I'm mad and have a screw loose but so do another 18 guys. Obviously every penny counts for The Brathay Trust and the wonderful work they do so I would urge you to give whatever you can to the cause. To sponsor me go to www.justgiving.com/paul-dewar10-in-10

Anyway enough of my warbling, beer (just the 2), sleep, work, run, and repeat for the next 8 months.

Enjoy, have fun and run

Cheers

Paul
